Electronics: Computers

Working computers in the game world. Laptops you can sit down at and use, with a terminal, a desktop, files, mail, websites and networks, all running on power that has to come from somewhere. Missions can hide intel on them, and players can hack, copy files and explore.

Laptops and the terminal

  • Interact with a laptop to boot it and use it. Starting and shutting down take a moment, and standby wakes up faster.
  • The text terminal understands the usual commands: listing, opening and copying files, creating and removing folders, searching, messaging other users, checking the network, logging in remotely, mounting USB drives and more. Type help or man in the terminal to see them.
  • Users, passwords and permissions are real. Some files and folders may be locked to certain users, or encrypted.
  • Copying files takes time, depending on whether it is local, to a USB drive or over the network.
  • The terminal has several looks, a choice of keyboard layouts, and adjustable text size.
  • A small Snake game is built in.
  • Nearby players can optionally see the laptop screen on the laptop itself, not only in the popup.

Desktop mode

  • A laptop can also open a graphical desktop with windows you can move and resize.
  • Apps include a terminal, file browser, notepad, mail, chat, web browser, calendar, map, CCTV viewer, music player, system info and settings.
  • Choose between a dark or light theme.
  • Laptops can be set to open the terminal, the desktop, or let you choose.

Files, USB drives and networks

  • Every laptop has its own filesystem. Mission makers can place files and folders on it, including ones that are encrypted or restricted.
  • USB flash drives can be carried, plugged into a laptop, and used to move files between computers.
  • Routers create Wi-Fi networks with a name and password, and a range. Laptops connect to them to reach other computers, websites and mail.

Power

  • Laptops run on power. Batteries, portable and rugged generators, ground power units, power generators, radar generators and solar panels are available, with a fuel or charge level.
  • If the power fails, the computer goes dark.

For mission makers

  • Editor attributes on laptops (username, password, save slot, interface, start powered on) and on routers, files and directories.
  • Zeus modules add users, files, folders, intel, websites, mail, calendar events and network connections, change interface and access, crash a device, and save or restore a laptop.
  • Desks and lamps are provided for setting up a workstation.

Settings

Terminal and desktop look, keyboard layout, boot and shutdown times, transfer speeds, the live in-world screen and power update rates are under the TF999 AE3 categories in the addon options. See settings_users.md (AE3 Computers). This addon has no keybinds: the terminal reads your keyboard directly (see keybinds_users.md).
